Description

Trip Information:

Everest Base Camp with Island Peak expedition will take you on to the acclimatization hike to the most popular trekking destination of Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar heading for the close-up views of Mt. Everest before climbing the Island Peak. It was the name given in 1952 to the mountain by Eric Shipton who believed it to be suggestive of an island in a sea of ice. It is also known as “Imja Tse” in the local Sherpa language.

Before the trek, we will explore the World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu with an approved city guide. Cultural sightseeing will be a marvelous experience. On the next day, we will take an exhilarating mountain flight to Lukla and trek up the Dudh Kosi Valley, circled by the soaring peaks of Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. It is a steep incline to Namche Bazaar, the capital of the Khumbu Sherpas, where we will again be greeted by spectacular mountain vistas. A rest day here assists acclimatization and there are great elective walks to enjoy the area.

This Everest Base Camp with Island Peak Expedition comprises a continuous trek to Tengboche, Dingboche, Gorak Shep, and Everest Base Camp. After enjoying the magnificent views of Mt. Everest and surrounding peaks, we will continue to descend towards Chukhung. After a day of walking from Chukhung, we will reach the Island Peak Base Camp to prepare to venture the peak. It may take an added day or two to scale the peak depending on weather conditions. For some people reaching the summit from the base camp is a daily practice. After a triumphant Island peak expedition by climbing, we will return at our comfortable pace back to Namche and Lukla for our return flight to Kathmandu.

This day is planned as an acclimatization day. We will not be making any progress towards Everest Base Camp. Rather, we will take a hike to the Nangkartshang peak just over Dingboche. The ascension is demanding but the climber will get a magnanimous mountain panorama: Everest, the highest point on the planet at 8,848 m, pillars directly ahead and on all sides approach the giants such as Nuptse, Pumori, Chagatse, Lhotse and innumerable others. We will make an instantaneous descent to Gorak Shep and have a warm satisfying breakfast, and then trek down to Pheriche. Stay overnight at a guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

It is only a small distance from here to the Base Camp, which we will reach by mid-afternoon. Accommodation will be in a tented camp and you will be having camp food cooked by our professional camping team. Stay overnight at a guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 14Climb Island Peak (6,187 m) and Return to Chukhung (4,710 m)

We have allotted two days to climb the Island Peak, although we will probably not need more than one if the weather conditions are fine. The strategy for the climb will be decided by our climbing Sherpa leader at the time, taking into account the group’s acclimatization, weather, snow conditions, and additional factors. He will provide us with ice climbing training to make you skillful in using climbing gear such as ropes, ice pick, harness, crampons, etc. The site of the camp is just below the permanent snowline. In the morning we may leave very early for the concluding climb to the summit. This may take between four to six hours, depending on snow and weather conditions. We will fix a rope on the summit headwall for safety on both rise and fall. Although it is not a technically complex climb, the snow slopes have been crevassed, the headwall is fairly steep and a head for heights is useful. Willpower and stamina are both required to reach the summit, but the impossible feeling of accomplishment atop this 6,187 m giant mountain will remain a lifetime memory. The view from the summit is wholly incredible! Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu and Baruntse are the dominant giants rising above a sea of smaller peaks. Given good conditions, we should be able to descend back to Chukhung from our summit attempt. Stay overnight at a guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 15Trek to Tengboche (3,860 m) - 6 hours

Leaving the mountains behind us, our descent will take us through different towns of Dingboche, Orsho, Shomare, and Lower Pangboche to reach the suspension bridge over the Imja Khola River to ascend steadily through Debuche and then to Tengboche. Stay overnight at a guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 16Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,441 m) via Khumjung (2,780 m) - 5 hours

From Tengboche, we will descend steeply through beautiful forests of juniper, rhododendron, and then to Phunki Tenga. After a welcome break and a cup of tea, we will cross the Dudh Kosi River and climb to Trashinga. From here the contours of the track high above the valley through to Shanasa, where we have the option of visiting Kunde and Khumjung villages before returning to Namche Bazaar which will be our stop for the night. Stay overnight at a guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 17Trek to Lukla (2,804 m) - 6 hours

This will be our last day of trekking since we will be returning to Lukla where our trek began. We will enjoy this time to reflect on the trek as a group and the individual achievement of all those who were a part of this journey. The afternoon will be free, so you can roam about, relax and enjoy a hot shower! In the evening, we will have a few celebratory drinks and dance with your trek mates. Stay overnight at a guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 18Morning Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu
