Mt. Dhaulagiri is the sixth highest peaks in Nepal and the seventh highest peak of the world with its height 8,167m above from the sea level. This mountain lies in the northwestern corridor of Nepal in Myagdi District. Mt. Dhaulagiri is extends about 120km from Kaligandaki River to the Bheri river in the west. “Dhaulagiri” is derived from the Sanskrit word, “Dhawala and Giri” which means “White and Mountain” respectively.
Dhaulagiri Circuit is a difficult trek, through high alpine fields, higher passes, and serene and isolated valleys. Dhaulagiri 8,167 m is the 7th highest mountain in the world. It means the “white mountain” though many mountains over the world have names that translate to White Mountain. Everyone is accustomed to the name Dhaulagiri which is located in the western part of Nepal and is probably by far, the best spot for remote and adventurous trekking in Nepal. The mere reason behind it is that it consists of more than fifteen 7,000 m magnificent peaks with the land of tense contrast.
Dhaulagiri Circuit trekking route will start after an 8-hour scenic tour from Kathmandu to Beni. After reaching Beni, we will head in a north-western direction through Babichour village, Dorbang, and then Darapani to Muri, from where we will head north yet keeping to the banks of the Myagdi Khola. Muri will be the last major village along this trail. It has been inhabited by people of the Magar tribe, of Mongoloid stock and evolved from the early settlers of the Nepalese middle hills. From Muri, we will head north forward to the Myagdi Khola via the villages of Baghara, Dobang, and Chartare to Pakoban. There are no permanent settlements, beyond Pakoban but if we head north we can go around the Chhanbardan Glacier, then keep to the left side, to reach the Dhaulagiri Base Camp from where magnificent mountain vistas are available. Head towards north-east from the Base Camp and ascend the steep incline to the French Pass (5,360 m), connecting Tukche Peak (6,920 m) and Sita Chuchura (6,611 m). Heading east you will descend a little and pass through a portion of the Hidden Valley and climb to Thapa Pass (5,250 m), connecting Tukche Peak and Thapa Peak (6,012 m) from where you begin your descent, heading south-east to Alubari. From Alubari, the trail further descends to the village of Marpha on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River and then heads north to Jomsom from where you take a flight back to Pokhara.
For those who have got ample time for the Dhaulagiri circuit trek, there is an option of continuing to trek down to Kalopani, Tatopani, Ghorepani then into Pokhara.
